Community Meeting in Logan about SB 81

500 Logan area families gathered to ask questions to an attourney about SB 81. There were a couple of misconceptions about the newly passed law.
1. That driving an illegal immigrant to the store, or giving them a ride would not be illegal.
Only if the driving is motivated by money (charged a fee) or over 100 miles of travlling.

2. That local law enforcement can arrest someone just for being here without documentation.
Only if they commit a crime or are already in the correctional system. That doesn't seem too different from current protocal. Law enforcement does not have "federal jurisdiction" all of the sudden. Check out the article in the Herald Journal.

  1. I like the comment about racial profiling - Boyd that would be a fun issue to discuss too. I don't think cops want to get in the middle of all this but they usually are. I can agree that we need to be careful of illegal immigrants who are at risk to society, but I generally have concerns about anyone at risk.

  2. I read this article with interest, too. I thought that the rep. from law enforcement had some interesting things to say, including that at present, he knew nothing about the expectations for enforcing this new law. I think it will be interesting to see what comes of it; to see whether the class's hypothesis about the legislation is correct.

  3. I am really proud of the Hispanic community for stepping up and attending something like this. I was also impressed that the meeting was held in Spanish. Too often I think of this community as laying down and taking everything that hits them. At least they are trying taking action!

  4. As I've mentioned in class, I don't think it is necessary to round up illegal immigrants who have lived here with families for several years. But, I am not in favor of illegal immigrants requiring the rest of the country to change their ways for them. If they want to live here they should figure out how to live here....including learning English. While Spanish translation is helpful, if they would learn English, I think more Americans would be less upset at the large numbers of immigrants.

  5. I agree that they would best serve themselves if they learned English. At the same time, they are really only hurting themselves and their earning power if they don't learn English. I have spoken Portuguese to my kids in the grocery store, just because the kids would respond quicker to me, and I have gotten dirty looks. It is not like I am planning a clandestine attack in the tomato aisle.
